Lunch The Sleeper

Poe’s Tavern

Ahh, one of my summertime favorites, though I go year-round. Poe’s is an iconic haunt on Sullivan’s Island, smack in the middle of Sully’s idyllic little beach town. (Side note: Sullivan’s Island is the best local beach… by far.)

The history of the place revolves around Edgar Allan Poe, who was stationed on the island for a period of time. Supposedly Sullivan’s inspired his short story “The Gold-Bug.”

Beyond the fun theme, the food is great bar food… burgers, sandwiches, fish tacos and the like. All the sandwiches can come with in-house ground burgers or chargrilled chicken. The names are Poe-themed… the Tell-Tale Heart is a favorite of mine (both the story and the sandwich). Basic bar is great and has everything you need, but there are no specialty cocktails or anything fun like that. (But you can head across the street to Home Team BBQ for a painkiller instead.)

One of my favs, the Sleeper: roasted garlic bleu and buffalo fried shrimp:

The Black Cat, with Edgar’s drunken chili, grilled onions, Applewood bacon and pimiento cheese:

Great porch, good luck finding a seat:

Patio’s great unless you get a sun-scorcher seat:

And DON’T forget to take a walk on the beach after!
